A Word from Our President…

I hope everyone had a restful holiday weekend as we head into fall and the start of a new season at the Torch Club of Williamsburg.

Our September 15th dinner will be a presentation by Pat Shutterly, who is visiting us from the Torch Club of Richmond. She will discuss “What is Money Laundering? And Why Should I Care?” This will be an opportunity to hear from someone who has worked in the banking industry and has first-hand experience with this type of crime. This is an issue that impacts all levels of society.

As far as club activities, the board is back in session as well after taking the month off, but it was a busy summer nonetheless with a well-attended IATC convention in Winston-Salem, NC and a successful joint-club activity at the Colin G. and Nancy N. Campbell Archaeology Center in Williamsburg (you can read more about the club activity here).

We start the year with newly-elected officers and board members. Steve Berke joined the officers as secretary and Mae Kuykendall joined the board. We also say thank you again to those who completed their service last year – Denise Harrington as secretary and Camilla Buchanan as a board member. We still have two slots to fill on the board, so please consider joining us, or simply pull one of the officers or board members aside to learn more about the role. The list of officers and board members can be found here.

In terms of our Membership Committee, I am happy to note that the board approved three new members at our last meeting in June – Genevieve Trench and Joe & Bobbi Fisler. Please welcome our newest members at this month’s dinner.

We are also looking for members who might be interested in serving on the Membership Committee. The committee is a key part of our outreach to the community as well as the members, so please consider helping with these important tasks.

The Programs Committee has been busy ensuring we have a series of excellent programs in our new season. While we have only posted the presentations through December, the committee will be posting even more shortly. That said, new ideas are always welcome, so please contact Kathi Mestayer or Lois Manes if you have any ideas for future presentations.

Our treasurer Peter Mellette has also been busy sending invoices to members as part of the start of a new season. Please contact Peter with any questions about the costs related to the new season. Fortunately, we are able to offer a reduced dinner rate for those who pay for the entire year upfront.

Finally, the Audit Committee has initiated work on the review of last year’s financial records. The committee would benefit from at least one more volunteer to assist with this work, so please contact me if you are able to assist with this activity. The review ensures the financial records are sound through a variety of tests, such as reviewing a sample of incoming membership/guest payments and outgoing checks.

As before, I just want to highlight again that we need dinner greeters for the new season. Please consider becoming a greeter for an upcoming dinner. You get to be the first to say hi to our arriving members and guests.

I look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday, September 15th. Please be sure to let me know by noon on Friday, September 11th if you and your guests plan to attend. This dinner count assists Colonial Heritage Club with its dinner planning.
