A Word from Our President

We have arrived at the end of the 2025/2026 season of the Torch Club of Williamsburg, with one more dinner meeting before our summer break.  It has been a year filled with friendship, good food, and fun discussions.

Our April dinner presentation by Steve Berke, “The Reign of Harry Byrd: Virginia Politics from 1925-1965,” was filled with thought-provoking facts about Virginia history and politics. As a New Englander who moved south, for me it was an eye-opening story about the region.

But wait, there’s more! Our May dinner will have Denise Harrington discussing what Mr. Byrd still means to Virginia in her presentation, “Harry Byrd: Why His Influence Still Matters in Virginia Politics Today.” During her talk, Denise will highlight some of her own personal experiences from working within Virginia politics.

Our Membership Committee and Programs Committee remain busy advertising the club and preparing our future presentations, respectively. If you are interested in helping on these committees in the new season, please let us know. You can find some of the upcoming fall presentations on our website, so please spread the word to friends and family who may be interested in attending. We will be discussing everything from money laundering to train wrecks.

I would also like to thank the Nominating Committee for its work putting together a slate of candidates for next year’s officers and board members. Mike Mason, Steve Berke, and Peter Mellete were very busy making this happen. The election itself will be held at our May dinner.

Finally, we are looking at holding a fun summer event during our break for those who are interested. We thought of a trip to the new Colin G. and Nancy N. Campbell Archaeology Center, which opened last month in Colonial Williamsburg, would be an enjoyable afternoon for everyone. We are still finalizing the details and will share more shortly.

We look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday, May 19th. And please be sure to let Denise know by noon on Friday, May 15th if you and your guests plan to attend. This helps Colonial Heritage Club with its dinner planning.
