Member Steve Berke provided the topic at the April dinner of the Torch Club of Williamsburg. His presentation, titled “The Reign of Harry Byrd: Virginia Politics from 1925-1965,” was a captivating summary of the man and the legend during his 40 years of political reign over the Democratic Party. Steve also shared a number of stories beyond politics, including Harry Byrd’s ownership of the largest apple orchard on the East Coast.
While Mr. Byrd’s positions for a more efficient government, as well as his advocacy for the creation of Shenandoah National Park, were seen by many as advances for the state, his support for racial segregation tarnished his image. As a result, in 2021 the Virginia General Assembly approved the removal of his statue from Capitol Square in Richmond, VA.
But what remains of Harry Byrd’s legacy today? That question will be answered by a second speaker, member Denise Harrington, at the May dinner. Her presentation, “Harry Byrd: Why His Influence Still Matters in Virginia Politics Today,” will tell the rest of the story. Denise is involved in present day Virginia politics, so she is in a position to offer a unique view of Mr. Byrd and his legacy.
