A Word from Our President…
Happy spring to everyone. Yes, it arrives with a coat of pollen dust, and April showers have yet to start, but it is still nice to leave winter behind.
I want to thank John Delano again for coming to our rescue at the March dinner after the planned speaker was unable to attend. John was ready with his presentation titled “Window Glass: The Rodney Dangerfield of Archaeological Artifacts.” After his talk, I think we all have a greater appreciation of the complex process used to create window glass. And after learning about the slow discoloration of older glass, I find myself looking at colonial structures in a new way.
Our April dinner will have a presentation by Steve Berke, who will talk about “The Reign of Harry Byrd: Virginia Politics from 1925-1965.” If you are not familiar with Mr. Byrd, you will learn quite a bit about Virginia’s history over this 40 year period. And if you are a history aficionado, you might still learn a few things about this unique politician. Steve said he has a lot of information to share, so get ready for an engrossing evening.
In terms of our Membership Committee, they have been busy engaging with the public via fliers and other means to spread the word about our club. If you have any ideas for recruiting new members, please contact Mike Mason or Camilla Buchanan with any questions. And remember, the easiest way for our club to grow is for you to invite a friend.
The Programs Committee presented the fall speaker schedule at the last board meeting. They have a nice mix of topics, including talks about fraud as well as a train wreck. We will be posting this list to the website shortly. Please contact Kathi Mestayer or Lois Manes if you have any other presentation ideas for future presentations.
The Nominating Committee has also been busy putting together a slate of officers and board members for the new season. Please give some consideration to serving as a future officer or board member. Mike Mason and Steve Berke on the Nominating Committee would like to hear from you. Once their work is done, they plan to share a slate of candidates at the April dinner.
By the way, we still need dinner greeters. Please consider becoming a greeter for an upcoming dinner. It’s an easy task – you get to say hi to arriving members and guests.
We look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday, April 21st. And please be sure to let Denise know by noon on Friday, April 17th if you and your guests plan to attend. This dinner count assists Colonial Heritage Club with its dinner planning.
