The members and guests of the Torch Club of Williamsburg enjoyed a presentation by member John Delano who discussed “Window Glass: The Rodney Dangerfield of Archaeological Artifacts.” Attendees learned about the history of glass, the complex process of making window glass, and ways to identify various types of glass.
John then explained the work he has been conducting analyzing glass remnants from earlier windows at Colonial Williamsburg’s Powder Magazine (shown in the photo). Like any good mystery dinner, attendees were giving information about the evidence (glass fragments) and then asked to determine the origin of these earlier windows. It was a great way to learn about both glass and colonial history.
Our April dinner will feature member Steve Berke presenting “The Reign of Harry Byrd: Virginia Politics from 1925-1965.” You can learn about this influential Virginia who was actually born in West Virginia. He went on to serve as a Virginia state senator, Virginia’s governor, and then a U.S. senator for Virginia. He was even drafted a few times as a nominee for president and president. Mr. Byrd was a force to be reckoned with in his time, and has sent ripples to the present day.
