The February dinner of the Torch Club of Williamsburg featured a presentation by member Lynn Bernard who discussed “Cup of Joe by Any Other Name: The History of Coffee.” Attendees found coffee samples and even coffee candies awaiting them on their tables. Lynn’s talk covered the founding of coffee in Ethiopia and the spread of the coffee beverage , its cultural and economic impact over the centuries, and its role in the modern world today.
Lynn even had a sing-along to a coffee-related song. It was not exactly the music of Hamilton, but it demonstrated again the cultural significance of the little bean from Africa. It was also the perfect topic as members and guests of the Torch Club sipped coffee with their dessert during the presentation.
Our March dinner will feature member John Delano presenting “Window Glass: The Rodney Dangerfield of Archaeological Artifacts.” As with coffee, we will hear the tale of a common item that has a long and interesting history. Of course, the first attempt by the English to manufacture glass in America occurred in Jamestown, VA, only a few miles away from where the Torch Club of Williamsburg will be hearing John Delano’s story.
Please consider visiting our Torch Club if you are interested in presentations such as these as well as many others planned through the season. Go to the presentations link for a full list of past and upcoming presentations.
