December Meeting Highlights – Adventures Biking Around the World

The December dinner of the Torch Club of Williamsburg was a fun evening with members and guests coming together during the holiday season for good cheer, great food, and an energetic presentation by Camilla Buchanan and Deb Hill who discussed “Adventures Biking Around the World.”

Camilla and Deb rode across the country multiple times on a tandem bike to experience the beauty of the nation, and get a bit of exercise as well. For example, their bike adventure on the TransAmerican Bicycle Trail took them 4,200 miles from Yorktown, Virginia to Astoria, Oregon. Along the way, they crossed six other historic trail – the Wilderness Trail, Trail of Tears, Pony Express Trail, Mormon Handcart Trail, Lewis and Clark Trail, and the Oregon Trail. And this was just one of many bike rides discussed at the meeting.

What Camilla and Deb said their remembered most was the friendly people throughout the country, the unique characteristics of each state (including things such as tornado shelters), and the wide openness of much of America where you found yourself on your own with maybe a few cows to talk with. Overall, it was an engaging presentation that may have encouraged a few members to dust off their bikes.

Our January dinner will feature speaker Dan Sherman who will present “Hamilton: Man and Musical.” If you had any questions about the Founding Father or the musical production on Broadway centuries later, then this is an evening you will not want to miss.

Please consider visiting our Torch Club if you are interested in presentations such as this one as well as many others planned through the season. Go to this link for a full list of past and upcoming presentations.
