Williamsburg Torch Club member Denise Harrington provided attendees at the May dinner with a fascinating presentation on “The Ancient History of Women in Spirituality.”
The presentation covered various texts, archaeological findings, and recent research to show how early religions around the world were female centered in their founding stories and belief systems. Citing the often seen goddess and serpent combination, the group learned about the frequency of this pair throughout early civilizations on multiple continents.
One of the central texts in this area is a 1976 book by Merlin Stone, a sculptor and art historian, titled When God Was a Woman. This book, as well as others, can broaden one’s understanding of early religions,
This presentation, as well as others throughout the 2024/2025 season, provided Torch Club members with a chance to share new ideas in the company of friends while enjoying a great dinner. It is the perfect forum for learning and camaraderie.
As a footnote, you can see Denise Harrington in an upcoming film, The American Miracle: Our Nation is No Accident, that will be shown at theaters from June 9-11 only. It is a retelling of our country’s founding, which is perfectly timed as we approach our Nation’s 250th anniversary.
Here is a trailer for the film. Check your local movie theater listings.
