Williamsburg Torch Club members attending the April dinner were presented with a terrific talk on “The Apollo 11 Landing on the Moon: Little-known Stories” by member John Delano. This is the second presentation by Dr. Delano to our club. His first presentation, covering “NASA’s Search for Life Beyond the Earth,” was shared with the club in April 2024.
Dr. Delano’s Apollo 11 presentation covered the relationship between Commander Neil Armstrong and Lunar Module pilot Buzz Aldrin, walked everyone through the very last moments as Apollo 11 descended toward the lunar surface, and discussed the particulars of the short mission (less than 24 hours) on the Moon. Dr. Delano brought his own model of Apollo 11 as we as recorded dialogue between the astronauts and Mission Control as the spacecraft made its descent.
It was a riveting tale that reminded us all of that amazing journey almost 56 years ago. It’s a journey that NASA will be attempting again very shortly as we look to a more permanent presence on the Moon, and eventually Mars.
