March Meeting Highlights – Federal Government Oversight: Keeping an Eye on Uncle Sam

The presentation at the March Torch Club meeting, titled “Federal Government Oversight: Keeping an Eye on Uncle Sam,” covered a number of topics that are currently in the headlines, including how to ensure the government remains effective and efficient.

The speaker, Walter Bayer, covered the history of government auditing, including the role of the Government Accountability Office and the Offices of Inspector General, as well as the finding and recommendations of those entities over the years to ensure taxpayers are protected from fraud and programs achieve intended results. The talk also covered recent changes in the oversight community, including the removal of inspectors general, as well as past and present ad hoc government efficiency efforts to reduce the size of government.

As with each of the presentations this year, the club members were provided with plenty of insights, and then added their own through thoughtful questions. It was a good evening allowing everyone to gain a better understanding of issues that are currently impacting every aspect of the federal government.
