A Word from President Peter Mellette…
March brings us wind, changing temperatures, and change in general. We have observed lots of changes in personnel in Washington and elsewhere as the new administration takes charge.
Our Treasurer and webmaster Walt Bayer will tell us this month about how those changes affect a job that he knows well from his past work – auditing the federal government. Please join us on March 18 as we hear from Walt about the process of keeping track of the fiscal side of Uncle Sam. It’s certainly topical and a good reminder as we prepare our tax returns for another year.
Last month Barnet Feingold told us about the structure of love and what he has learned from his work as a clinical psychologist. Barney shared his thoughts on what makes a loving, trusting relationship based on years of observation and professional experience. His presentation sparked lots of questions, which Barney gamely addressed, much to the delight of those attending.
The Torch Club of Williamsburg is about reaching across and drawing from our different professions and interests to learn from each other – it is dedicated to lifelong learning and to building new connections to information and interesting people in our community.
Your Board continues to work to put together fun and interesting meetings. We took action on March 6th to appoint a nominating committee for the upcoming year. Please let Lynn Bernard, Tanya Fisher, and Mae Kuykendall, the nominating committee, know if you are interested in serving as a Board member or officer. We also authorized the completion and filing of a 1024 application for tax exempt status as a 501(c)(7) organization; while it will not permit tax deduction of dues and fees, it does meet our legal requirements as a club. We also heard about marketing efforts at the Williamsburg Regional Library, county and city Rec Centers, and elsewhere which have already provided us contacts to other interesting people in our community.
Speaking of the Board, we could use two more good people right now, before the fall. The job is not time consuming (1 extra monthly meeting) and it keeps the Torch alive in Williamsburg. Please consider being a Board member, if not now, then when we elect new Board members later in the Spring. We can also use greeters at future meetings – see Walt and Camilla Buchanan.
Membership growth continues to be a focus for our club. Please be sure to invite guests to the upcoming meetings. Ask Camilla for her ideas and assistance on making your guests welcome.
The Program Committee continues to plan informative and engaging topics for each meeting. The talks ahead range from space exploration to spiritual women. We welcome your recommendations and invite your participation as we schedule meetings for Winter/Spring 2025-2026. See Kathi Mestayer and Lois Manes if you have an idea for a program or fill out the list on the table in March.
We look forward to seeing you in March! See you on March 18th and please be sure to let Denise know by noon on Friday, March 14th if you and your guests plan to attend. We need to let Colonial Heritage know in advance so that they will have enough place settings and food for the meals.
