A Word from President Peter Mellette…
As I contemplate the new fallen snow outside, what better time to consider Spring gardens. Susan Dippre will join us again, this time as a speaker about her knowledge of garden design and what works best for successful pollination and thriving gardens. She has years of experience in design, including her past work with Colonial Williamsburg. Please join us on January 21 to hear from Susan and to plan for your next outside garden.
Last month Bill Rhodes spoke on Cicero’s advice from 2068 years ago. Cicero wrote about the joys and pains of aging and how we can best live out the days ahead and contribute to the common good. It led to a lively discussion and fortunately (unlike Cicero), no one suffered any injury from the discussion.
Thanks to everyone for your continued interest in Torch! I have enjoyed getting to know so many interesting people in the Williamsburg area since we were chartered in June 2023. The Torch Club of Williamsburg is for you – it is dedicated to lifelong learning and to building new connections to information and interesting people in our community.
Your Board met on January 2 and welcomed one new Board member (Lynn Bernard) and voted to approve 2 new club members – Ann and David Tetrault. We passed a resolution acknowledging Bill Evers’ efforts as treasurer and appointed Walt Bayer to serve in Bill’s place. Please give your thanks to Bill – he will be missed. We also discussed the continued need for timely notice of plans to attend the monthly dinner meetings, the end of year US Department of Treasury FinCEN filing that most organizations have had to do, and filing for tax-exempt status by this summer. We also discussed holding an informational meeting for new members in the Spring. If you have anyone you would like to invite to the lunch meeting, please let Camilla Buchanan know.
Speaking of the Board, we could use two more good people. The job is not time consuming (1 extra monthly meeting) and it keeps the Torch alive in Williamsburg. Please consider being a Board member.
Membership growth continues to be a focus for our club. Please be sure to invite guests to the upcoming meetings. I have had guests at each of the meetings this fall, and I plan to continue to invite others. Ask Camilla Buchanan for her ideas and assistance on making your guests welcome.
The Program Committee continues to plan informative and engaging topics for each meeting. The talks ahead range from garden planning in January, to government oversight, to space exploration, to spiritual women in the Spring and to what love is on Valentine’s Day week. We welcome your recommendations and invite your participation as we schedule meetings for Fall 2025. See Kathi Mestayer and Lois Manes if you have an idea for a program or fill out the list on the table in January.
We look forward to continuing to build on our successful first year! See you on January 21st and please be sure to let Denise know by noon on January 17th if you and your guests plan to attend. We need to let Colonial Heritage know in advance so that they will have enough place settings and food for the meals.
