Those attending the December dinner of the Williamsburg Torch Club enjoyed a presentation titled “A Brief Overview of Cicero’s “De Senectute” (On Aging)” by Torch Club member Dr. Bill Rhodes. It was a well attended discussion with plenty of questions from the audience during and after the presentation.
As explained in the talk, the essay was written toward the end of Cicero’s life when he was considering the nature of life and some of the advantages that come with old age. For instance, advancing age may take us away from active work, but it leaves more time for mental activities. In addition, judgement itself improves as we leave behind the distracting appetites of youth.
It was a night to ponder where we are in life, what we want do to with our lives as we grow older, and what we want to leave behind as instructions for the younger members of society who could benefit from of our experience.
Plenty to ponder over dessert and coffee.
