A Word from President Peter Mellette

As we approach the end of the year, what better time to consider aging father time – and our own mortality. Bill Rhodes (who previously spoke to us about the harrowing subject of air traffic control) will speak in December on Cicero’s advice from 2068 years ago. Cicero wrote about the joys and pains of aging and how we can best live out the days ahead and not fear the inevitable. Cicero’s (and Bill’s) take on aging will be the subject when we meet again to celebrate the holidays and the short days of winter on December 17.

Last month William and Mary Professor Emeritus Terry Meyers spoke about how he got interested in the Bray School and how the original structure was found. It was a fascinating story that occurred right down the street,

Thanks to everyone for your continued interest in Torch! I have enjoyed getting to know so many interesting people in the Williamsburg area since we were chartered in June 2023. The Torch Club of Williamsburg is for you – it is dedicated to lifelong learning and to building new connections to information and interesting people in our community.

Your Board met on December 6 and voted to approve 4 new members – Carol and Jim Beers, Mike Mason, and Sandy Stephan. We also approved Lynn Bernard as a new Board member.

Due to his involvement in other activities, Bill Evers announced his resignation as treasurer – he will be missed. If anyone wants to step up and assist beginning in January, please let me know. Bill has left us with a clear system for keeping track of payments and expenses, and we will be working to simplify the job further (including looking at online payment options).

Speaking of the Board, we could use two more good people. The job is not time consuming (1 extra monthly meeting) and it keeps the Torch alive in Williamsburg. Please consider being a Board member.

Membership growth continues to be a focus for our club. Please be sure to invite guests to the upcoming meetings. I have had guests at each of the meetings this fall, and I plan to continue to invite others. Ask Camilla Buchanan for her ideas and assistance on making your guests welcome.

The Program Committee continues to plan informative and engaging topics for each meeting.  The talks ahead range from aging in December, to government oversight, to space exploration, to spiritual women in the Spring and to what love is on Valentine’s Day week. We welcome your recommendations and invite your participation as we schedule meetings for Fall 2025. See Kathi Mestayer and Lois Manes if you have an idea for a program or fill out the list on the table in December.

We look forward to continuing to build on our successful first year! See you on December 17th and please be sure to let Denise know by noon on December 13 if you and your guests plan to attend. We need to let Colonial Heritage know in advance so that they will have enough place settings and food for the meals.
