A Word from our President…
Dear Williamsburg Torch Members: We next meet on Tuesday May 21, 2024 at 5:30 pm at Colonial Heritage to hear our own Randy Casey-Rutland give the final presentation of the Torch Club of Williamsburg’s inaugural year. Dr. Casey-Rutland is a theologically educated business executive and has a unique background in ethics and religion, something that you don’t find in most property managers – Lewis Center for Church Leadership. Randy will be talking about a vocational interest, namely what is a homeowners’ association and how it works. No doubt Randy’s varied background and his good humor will be on display as he takes back to earth following last month’s exploration of the heavens.
Thanks to Torch Club member John Delano for his fascinating talk at our April 16 meeting about evidence of other worlds outside our solar system which could sustain life and the efforts to identify life on other worlds. Professor Delano’s talk was much appreciated by those in attendance. We already have talks tentatively scheduled for fall 2024. Talk to Kathi Mestayer or Lois Manes if you’d like to sign up to give a paper between January 2025 and May 2025. We’d like to have a full slate of talks lined up before our September 2024 meeting.
The Torch Club nominating committee of Walt Bayer, Deb Hill, and Megan Tschannen-Moran made nominations to the club for two Board positions and Board officers for 2024-2025. There were no new nominations from the floor at the April meeting. The club will vote on the following nominees at the May meeting:
- President: Peter Mellette
- Vice President: Kathi Mestayer
- Treasurer: William Evers
- Secretary: Denise Harrington
- Two Board Members-at-Large (with terms ending 6/27): Steven Berke, Tanya Fisher
If you haven’t visited the club website at www.williamsburg torch club.org, you should. Walt Bayer continues to populate and operate the robust site as our webmaster. There is a password protected “Members Only” section which Walt has populated with names and email addresses of club members.
Your Board continues to work hard on putting together the details of the meetings and appreciates your feedback on the setting, meals, and meeting topics. Denise Harrington’s venue committee made a recommendation, which the Board adopted, to remain at Colonial Heritage for next year, with an enhanced menu option.
Please speak with one of the current Board members (see below) or me if you have thoughts on how we can improve our meetings and communications, or if you would like to assist in some way.
- Secretary – Tanya Fisher
- Treasurer – Bill Evers
- Membership – Camilla Buchanan
- Programs – Kathi Mestayer (Vice President) and Lois Manes
- Parliamentarian – Steve Berke
- Venue Committee – Denise Harrington (Chair)
- Other Board members: Carol Bender and Walt Bayer.
Don’t forget that the International Association of Torch Clubs is holding its centennial convention in Richmond in June. You can learn more about the convention and sign up at www.torch.org. We are also looking for a good attendance from the Williamsburg club.
Please remember to respond promptly to Tanya to let her know that you (and hopefully your guests) are coming on Tuesday, May 21th at 5:30. Randy Casey-Rutland is a great speaker, and it will be a good talk for guests to attend. Hope to see you and your guests then.
