A Word from our President…
Our ancestors appear to have decided that the calendar year starts when the days start getting perceptively longer again. So, compared to the day on December 19, (according to Sunrise and Sunset Timetable (virginia.gov)) we get to celebrate 28 extra minutes of daylight when we meet on January 16, 2024 at 5:30 pm at Colonial Heritage to hear the next presentation for the Torch Club of Williamsburg.
Thanks to Torch Club member Bob Spitzer, we will have the opportunity to hear from a legal expert on a topic which has bedeviled policy makers for years. Gun control has become political football. The incidents of gun violence, like the day time hours, seem to be perceptively increasing without definitive actions to stop the loss and with perfunctory hopes and prayers. Join us for Professor Spitzer’s effort to bring clarity to the constitutional and safety issues and perhaps a solution to the table.
At our December meeting, I was pleased to speak on the use of creative writing as a professional outlet. The idea for the talk originated from my mother’s use of poetry as a way of connecting with her creative side and reducing stress from her career as a pioneer in medical oncology. I appreciate the feedback I’ve received and hope that it will inspire others to sign up to give talks next year. Please see Kathi Mestayer or Lois Manes if you’d like to sign up as a speaker between September 2024 and May 2025.
Don’t forget that the International Association of Torch Clubs is holding its centennial convention in Richmond in June. You can learn more about the convention and sign up at www.torch.org. Our club is seeking a delegate, so please let me or our Secretary Tanya Fisher know of your interest. Additionally, we have a vacancy on our Williamsburg Torch Club Board of Directors. If you are interested in serving, as a Board Member at-large, please let me know, or again follow up with Tanya Fisher. Our desire is to fill this position as soon as possible.
I am glad that so many of you continue to see the value of Torch. Your Board has continued to work hard on putting together the details of the meetings and appreciates your feedback on the setting, meals, and meeting topics. Denise Harrington is spearheading a committee which will look at our venue options. I know that she will appreciate your thoughts. Walt Bayer is working on the details of a website, and your board would like your input on these and other items. Please speak with one of the current Board members or me if you have thoughts on how we can improve our meetings and communications, or if you would like to assist in some way.
